Intralasik, the ultimate technique

The medical director at ophthalmologic Corporation “VISSUM”, Dr. Jorge Alió, ranks first in Spain, within the field of Ophthalmology, in one of the most important classifications that measures the scientific prestige. This scale – called “Índice H” - evaluates research, and results publication, as well as, the references made by other specialists on these works. In this way, Dr. Jorge Alio index is 35, the highest in Spain. In addition, he has been the main Professor in Ophthalmology in Alicante’s University for the last twenty years and Jorge Alio Foundation’s President which makes an important social work in least developed countries.

The Ophthalmologic Corporation “VISSUM”, MEDITERRANEAN HEALTH CARE member, has 26 medical centers all over Spain, but Professor Jorge Alio treats only in Alicante.

The Dr. explains what Intralasik technology is and which it’s the benefits are:

More than 95% of the information that our brain receives goes through the eyes. Therefore, the impact the vision has on our quality of life cannot be compared with any other senses. Eyes care is enormously significant today, as life expectancy is and higher the number of we can do, lead us to use our vision, take care of its quality and its maintenance. It is important for every person to go periodically to the ophthalmologist to make check in the same way that we make it at other specialists.

An annual eye examination is essential to maintain eye’s health and correct problems that require refractive surgery such as strabismus, nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, because although a lot of interventions can be performed at any age, the vision recovery vision and therefore its success, is related to age.

If we look at a child example, one of the first diseases to treat and detect is the lazy eye or amblyopia, as it is easier to treat at youngest age. From age 8 to 10 the difficulty to recover is much higher. On the other hand, visual recovery is more difficult for adults. The 80% of cases the visual impairment and blindness can be avoided by performing a query.

The last years have meant a gradual increase of surgical interventions to correct refractive problems (myopia, hypermetropia and astigmatism), and avoid eyeglasses or contact lenses dependency. This increase has been parallel to the technological advances, which allow that increasingly more people can undergo an operation in order to correct their visual defects.

But which are the real benefits using Intralasik technique? Using Intralasik technique there is no need to make any cut, as opposed to the microkeratome, the traditional technique which uses a mechanical device that slices a thin layer of cornea. Due to Intralasik, the risk of complications reduces as it's a special laser (femtosecond laser), do not use any blade and reduces the infection risk. In addition it is a 100% laser technique and absolutely personalized, since it adapts to the characteristics of each patient. Another advantage of this procedure it provides complete safety and surgical precision so far unprecedented intervention, at the same time as obtains excellent results in the elimination of refractive defects. Its benefits are proved: laser Intralasik is a much more predictable technique, since it is directed by a computer, greatly improving the final visual result. In addition to refine the procedure, the postoperative of the Intralasik is less obtrusive than the conventional method. It is less traumatic surgery and it is performed ambulatory. The patient is able to go back home as soon as is treated. The recovery is very quick, and the patient can be back to normal life, with proper precautions, the following day of the intervention. This technique assumes that the patient has a much faster recovery to be made very small, safe and precise corneal incisions.

Until a few years ago, a 3% of people who wished to correct their refraction defects could not do it since the thickness of the cornea delimits the incision with the microkeratome. Now, thanks to the Intralasik, there is the possibility for an intervention to patients with thin corneas in a safe way. Until now thousands patients, from Vissum and MEDITERRANEAN HEALTH CARE, have already been able to enjoy this surgery with excellent results.

To be eligible for refractive surgery General requirements are as follows: having less than 12 diopters of myopia and less than 7 of farsightedness or astigmatism, have more than 18 years, keep stable the refractive defect during the past few years, and a good eye health.
