Liposuction

Liposuction is a surgical technique to remove fatty deposits in certain parts of the body such as the hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, jowl, inner arms, etc. This is not a weight loss technique, but is intended to reshape the figure in areas where fat tends to accumulate.

Benefits of the Operation

The fat removed during the operation does not come back because the fat cells stop multiplying at the end of puberty. Therefore, provided liposuction is performed after the age of approximately sixteen, the lipodystrophy should not reoccur.

Another of the great advantages of liposuction is that several areas can be treated during the same session, which gives the figure a more slender appearance.

Medical-technical description

Liposuction consists of removing excess fat from the affected area. This fat is sucked out through fine cannulas or tubes that are inserted through tiny incisions in the fat deposits under the skin, leaving no visible scars. By vacuuming out the excess fat, the area treated can be recontoured for a better shape and figure.

About the operation

This operation is normally performed under local anaesthetic and sedation and takes between one and two hours, depending on the amount of fat to remove. This is an outpatient procedure, with no hospitalisation required.

Before the operation

  • You will have a blood test and ECG.
  • You must not eat or drink for 12 hours before your operation.
  • You must remove all metal objects during the operation (rings, bracelets, earrings, body piercings, etc.).

Post-operative care

  • For one month after the operation you must wear a corset and massage the treated areas to control inflammation and help the skin to adapt to the new silhouette. In most cases, the postoperative period is 24 hours.
  • As well as the swelling and bruising caused by the surgery, liposuction leaves some tiny, almost invisible scars, because the cannulas used to suck out the fat are very fine. It will take some time for these scars to disappear and for the final results to be visible.
  • With regard to possible discomfort, this depends on the area treated and how large it is. The abdominal zone tends to be the most painful. Knee and thigh liposuction is very uncomfortable for the first few days, but the pain can be controlled effectively with analgesics. You should have lymphatic drainage massage twice a week for the first month to aid recovery.
  • Stay away from the sun and UVA rays for the first two months to prevent pigmentation spots from forming on the skin.
  • You can start exercising again a week after the operation, but you must not do sports that involve jumping, such as jogging or aerobics, for one month.
